Good day ProBonoMatters

We are being unfairly treated by department of Military Veterans which seems to be serving only certain individuals (probably members of the ANC)…We were in the army for two years (2006-2007) and have done & completed the basic military training. Our concern is we have applied for the military veterans benefits in 2016 May and the department has neither rejected nor accepted our application even after the 90 days waiting period. The Military Veterans Act 18 of 2011 states : “military veteran” means any South African citizen who– (a) rendered military service to any of the military organisations, statutory and 15 non-statutory, which were involved on all sides of South Africa’s Liberation War from 1960 to 1994; (b) served in the Union Defence Force before 1961; or (c) became a member of the new South African National Defence Force after 1994, and has completed his or her military training and no longer performs military service, and has not been dishonorably discharged from that military organisation or force: Provided that this definition does not exclude any person referred to in paragraph (a), (b) or (c) who could not complete his or her military training due to an injury sustained during military training or a disease contracted or associated 25 with military training….”

We fall under sub-section/clause (c) of that definition. We went to the Military veterans head-office several times without getting a straight answer and at some point we were told that we do not qualify for such benefits even though the Act says something else. I can forward the communication with the deputy director where they claim I had not submitted a certain print-out from the SANDF. We really need your intervention because we have a strong feeling that they’re just delaying the whole process purposely.

I have the same problem and feel that the department of military veteran was only established to accommodate the needs of friends who comes from mk and apla. I would like probonomatters to get to the bottom of this matter so that we can also be give what we rightful deserve as military veterans.

I have the same problem and feel like this department of military veteran is taking us for a ride since we don’t come from so called revolutionary armies (mk and apla). We cannot ignore the DMV act and the fact that we also earned the military veteran status by serving in the army for two years . Therefore we are entitled to all the benefits given to military veterans. I would like probonomatters to get to the bottom of this matter so that we can be given our benefits

Now they are busy recruiting civilians, issuing them with veterans uniform. You should see how they wear that uniform. Anyway maybe we need to get ANC membership cards before we are assisted or considered.
