Prominent South African businessman, Sandile Zungu, has released hair raising details of an apparent extortion plot set against him.

Zungu made the chilling release via his Facebook page (we contacted him to verify authenticity of the post). He states that a man calling himself Brigadier Khumalo and using the number 0710465921 has called him with a claim that he is a concerned policeman, going out of his way to tip Zungu of an impending raid on him by an elite police unit, the Hawks, based on planted evidence.

Zungu states that ‘the Brigadier’ claimed to be calling from Durban and wanted to make meeting arrangements in Johannesburg. But then he’s somersaulted and asked to send a third party. And its it’s been indicated that the un-FICA-ed number was actually calling from Johannesburg.

Zungu declared that “We could only speculate that ‘Brigadier Khumalo’ is a criminal that sought to extract easy money from a Mr Zungu. Since then, ‘Brigadier Khumalo’ has been pestering my personal driver for the aforementioned third party to expedite his travel arrangements.”

Zungu further noted that “Whoever has time, please get in touch with ‘Brigadier Khumalo’ at 0710465921 and tell him if he is legitimate, then he must proceed with his raids, I have no fear whatsoever. Please tell him, that by his own admission, I am an upright businessman who is not prone to discussing ill-gotten dockets of whatever nature under the cover of darkness. Most importantly, tell ‘Brigadier Khumalo’ to leave me alone. Tomorrow I will be making a statement to the SAPS (South African Police Service).”

Here follows the full Sandile Zungu post.

Around midday, today (22May), I was called from a mobile number – 0710465921, by a gentleman that introduced himself as Brigadier Khumalo. ‘Brigadier Khumalo’ presented himself as my admirer that is appalled by a sophisticated attempt to frame me, using planted evidence of some sort. He told me they (presumably – Hawks) were planning on raiding my various properties within the next 48 hrs. He must have sensed my shock and annoyance when he offered to instruct his (travel) agent to arrange for him to fly up to present and discuss with me the docket that underpins the intended raid.

I immediately briefed my attorney about the strange ‘tip off’. A few hours later, the same ‘Brigadier Khumalo’ informed me his agent wouldn’t proceed with his mystery flight. Reason? He wouldn’t compromise his standing in the force by disclosing he was flying out solely to tip off a ‘suspect’.

When I offered to (instead) fly with my lawyer to meet him in Durban, he wasn’t comfortable. He suggested any third party close to me should rather telephone him to arrange a trip for him (up to Johannesburg). I immediately instructed my electronics security personnel to guide me on the said caller. The response was quick and unambiguous: the caller was in Johannesburg (not Durban); the caller number is not FICA-ed, hence its owner is unknown; and the 071 number wouldn’t be a Hawks number. We could only speculate that ‘Brigadier Khumalo’ is a criminal that sought to extract easy money from a Mr Zungu. Since then, ‘Brigadier Khumalo’ has been pestering my personal driver for the aforementioned third party to expedite his travel arrangements.

Whoever has time, please get in touch with ‘Brigadier Khumalo’ at 0710465921 and tell him if he is legitimate, then he must proceed with his raids, I have no fear whatsoever. Please tell him, that by his own admission I am an upright businessman who is not prone to discussing ill-gotten dockets of whatever nature under the cover of darkness. Most importantly, tell ‘Brigadier Khumalo’ to leave me alone. Tomorrow I will be making a statement to the SAPS.

The power is mine. The South African constitution emboldens me. I will not be disempowered by fear. Neither will I be disempowered by a faceless criminal.
