Gautrain hit by strike: Here’s all you need to know about their contingency plan

Gautrain services are set to be disrupted as from today, the 30th of July 2018, due to a worker’s strike led by the United National Transport Union (Untu) after wage talks came to a dead end.

The union has promised to bring all services to a halt but Gautrain management issued a statement saying it has come up with contingency plan to run limited services.

Gautrain spokesperson Kesagee Nayager said the limited service will be focused on peak periods and on certain routes.

Centurion and Sandton:

  • Trains will run only at peak period, between 05h45 – 9h00 and 16h00 – 19h00, every 12 minutes

Sandton and Park

Trains will run every 20 minutes between 05h45 – 9h00 and 16h00 – 19h00.

Sandton, Rhodesfield and OR Tambo International Airport

A bus service is set to operate between Sandton, Rhodesfield and the airport stations between 5.45am and 7pm on a fixed fare of R21 per trip.


Buses will service only Centurion‚ Sandton and Park stations on peak periods and follow the usual bus routes

Ticket offices

Ticket offices at all stations will be closed and passengers are encouraged to use the ticket vending machines or to load value on the Gautrain website or App.

Refunds for lost trips

Nayager  said passengers with monthly or weekly train products will be refunded for lost trips.

Nayager said no train service will be available during the off-peak period and only Centurion‚ Sandton and Park station will be open. All trains will be 8-car trains.
